Home is where you’re not…

People often say “home is where the heart is.”

It’s also true that home is where you are not.

When I lived in Indiana, I’d say I’m going home and mean I’m going back to my parents’ house in Ontario. When in Ontario, I’d tell people I was going back home in a week and mean that I’d be returning to Anderson, Indiana.

On our summer travels this year we went “home” to Ontario to show the kids some of the areas where I grew up. Now, our anticipation grows as we drive “home” to Wetaskiwin, where we have our house, the people we love and our lives are established.

My grandfather was a Christian and as he aged he loved listening to southern gospel songs about “going home.” They were a reminder that while his life was lived almost entirely in Manitoba, his true home was with Jesus, in a place my grandfather was not currently located in, but was greatly anticipating.

For the Christian, this world is not our true home. Our citizenship is in heaven and when our time on earth is over we will go “home.” We can look forward to the chance to be with Jesus in a place beyond our wildest imagination. There’s much to be done here in our earthly “home” while we learn to live and love like Jesus, but let’s journey through this life with anticipation that our true and final home is where we’re not…but we’ll be there someday!

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ sustain you on your journey home.
Sincerely,

Pastor Nate
